CNY Jazz in the City, Syracuse’s mobile public health music series, is headed to the East Side for its next installment. For a second year, the 1200 block of East Fayette Street between the Boys and Girls Club and Parkside Commons will become the site for a Juneteenth kickoff block party. The concert features the music of “Houston & Wynn JSF Band,” a new all-star group formed by local soul legends Mike Houston and Sam Wynn. CNY Jazz in the City events are presented as concert fairs, with the music surrounded by a healthcare village of local, regional and state providers as well as urban crafters and food trucks. The LeadSafe CNY Coalition will again use the series as a platform for outreach and public engagement to address the urgent issues of lead poisoning and environmental health, including help in requesting home water testing. Syracuse Community Health medical professionals provide access to mobile testing, screening, counseling, personal physician referrals and more. Interviews are incentivized with NYS Lottery scratch-offs. Last year’s debut in this new location was exciting, despite the monsoon that hit us halfway through,” said Larry Luttinger, series organizer. “This year will be one of scaling up to highlight the continuing progress of the new owners in making Parkside Commons a success story. They are renovating apartments, have plans to raze and rebuild multiple buildings, and have already scheduled regular monthly meetings in their community room to inform, educate, and advise residents about social and healthcare services.” Ahead of the upcoming New York State Department of Health presence at the Valley Plaza and Syracuse Community Health events on July 23 and August 6, city residents interested in being tested for PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” pesticides, and heavy metals should call 518-402-7950 now to book an appointment, because slots are limited. All participants will receive a $75 Visa gift card. All are welcome to contribute to this statewide effort to collect data about levels of these chemicals in New Yorkers. All events are free and open to the public. Lawn chairs are suggested. No alcohol is served. All events are Thursday 6 to 9 p.m. Details at cnyjazzinthecity.org” - Syracuse.com
